Girls Rooms – St Pauls & Gitondo

Girls Rooms

The headmasters and parents of both St Pauls and Gitondo schools had voiced concerns about the difficulties girls faced during their menstrual cycles, which often led to missed school days or dropping out entirely.

St Pauls

At St Pauls, there was a “Room for Girls” originally built 12 years ago to support female students. As the student population had doubled, the facility required significant upgrades. With support from a Rotary grant, ACSD renovated the room, which now provides a private, dignified space for girls to manage menstruation, with hygienic and comfortable amenities. This vital addition has greatly improved attendance and academic performance among the school’s 400 adolescent girls, enabling them to focus on their education without disruption.

Gitondo

Remaining funds from the Rotarty grant were used to extend the impact to Gitongo School, a nearby campus with 1,600 students. The school staff prepared land for the construction of a four-room facility designed for girls. Complete with beds, curtains, and furnishings, this welcoming and supportive space empowers girls to stay in school, fostering their long-term success and independence.
